Kayak Fishing Is An Extreme Sport
Prepare to be addicted
To say that kayak fishing is an extreme sport, is not an understatement. For many enthusiasts, it’s not a matter of reeling in a couple of small fish for dinner; it’s the thrill of hauling in something bigger than their kayaks can handle and trundling it back to shore to the gasps of their buddies and peers. There is a kayak fishing community spirit that spurs each participant on to greatness. The catch of the day can be the talk of the town, and now with the Internet, the talk of the world … of likeminded individuals, at least.
Saltwater or freshwater, coast, island or lake, the love of such an exciting outdoor experience can be infectious. If grandpa was a fisherman, chances are, the stories he tells the kids will see them down their Gameboy for a weekend to set off on an adventure. Whether any fish are caught is not the point; letting kids try kayaking for a hobby is a great way to pump them full of energy and let them exhaust themselves on the water. Any beginner can learn in one short lesson how to move around in a single-person boat, but knowing the ropes to do with fishing, safety and proper handling techniques is somewhat more complex.
There are obvious benefits to kayak fishing as opposed to fishing from boats, the surf or from piers or jetties. For starters, the physical fitness required to self-propel the kayak has to be pretty good, or else, risk running out of steam for the return trip! Kayak fishermen tend to develop their fitness levels while pursuing their hobby and this is an excellent way to kill the two proverbial birds with one stone! The other popular benefit is that fishing from a kayak often reaps bigger catches than from other vessels or locations.
Beginners should always seek instruction from more experienced guides. Early outings should be in calm waterways such as lakes and slow streams. Being able to manoeuvre the kayak is as important as knowing what kind of fishing gear to take and what kind of bait to use. Anyone inexperienced at kayak fishing should never attempt to head offshore unless someone who is familiar with the area and the dangers that exist accompanies them. There are incalculable numbers of variables that can turn a pleasant day of tranquil fishing on the ocean, to a tragedy of catastrophic proportions within a short space of time.
The leisure fishing industry is made up of all kinds of keen anglers; those who prefer the relative safety and luxury of full-size yacht rentals, others who enjoy casting their rod into the surf and still other men and women who prefer the peace and calm of sitting creek-side on fold-up stools, dropping a line into the gurgling water. Kayak fishing is indeed a sport of its own, attracting keen followers at an increasing rate. Whether the fish are released back into the ocean or reeled in to be shown off and consumed later, the sport becomes addictive and many enthusiasts find that their fishing expeditions quickly increase from monthly to once or twice weekly.
